 Environmental Projects

Over the past 13 years many volunteers and organisations have helped with various environmental projects around Dalbeattie, these include restoration of the Old Port, maintenance and clearance in Rounall Wood and planting and maintaining gardens at Islecroft. The Initiative continues to develop and enhance these areas of the town with a team of dedicated volunteers and local community groups.

The Old Port and Rounall Wood are popular destinations for locals and visitors to Dalbeattie and are of significant historical interest. It is our aim to preserve these areas of interest and maintain the pathways which allow anyone to gain an insight into the times of high industry in Dalbeattie in days gone by. However, the days of industry have since been replaced with the emphasis being placed on nature. Natural habitats have been constructed with sympathetic planting to encourage and attract varied wildlife species to these popular destinations of Dalbeattie.

EVENTS

Regular environmental events are held on selected Friday mornings throughout each month where a team of hard working volunteers aim to maintain and improve areas of natural beauty and historical interest in the town.  The nature of the work is diverse and infinite in nature and we would encourage and welcome anyone who is interested to come along and get involved. Diary of events.

The Initiative  has had the pleasure of working alongside pupils from the local Primary Schools and young people from Dalbeattie High School. Other local groups, such as Dalbeattie Parish Sunday School have also been keen to get involved and in turn improved their local environment. The events are diverse in nature and include anything from constructing bird and bat boxes to litter picking and leaf clearances. Various activities which young people get involved can help their group gain Eco Schools Awards; contribute to Duke of Edinburgh Awards or perhaps achieving an MV Award. Therefore, there are lots of reasons why your group, organisation or young person should get involved.

If you would like to be involved in any of our projects or identify any potential projects in and around the town, please contact  Michelle McRobert on 01556 612518 or 612436.
