2013 Walking Festival
Dalbeattie's 6th annual walking Festival will take place from 15th – 18th August 2013. Planning for the Festival is now complete and the schedule is available here for you to download.
Report from 2012 Walking Festival
Despite the sometimes less than perfect weather, nearly 200 people enjoyed the guided walks and other activities of the fifth Dalbeattie Walking Festival last weekend.
The walk to Hestan Island was particularly popular, over 60 adults and children, plus several dogs, turned up to venture onto the sands. Unfortunately it was not possible to get to the Island as the recent rain had swollen the streams which run across the sands. Betty Howard, one of the organisers said ‘It was a bit of a surprise to arrive at the parking area to see over 20 cars and 60 people, but a very pleasant one !!’.
The two evening illustrated talks were both excellent, one about Red Squirrels and the current efforts being made to safeguard their future in Dumfries and Galloway, given by the new Red Squirrel officer for D&G, Heinz Traut. The other talk ‘Wildlife for Walkers’ was specially created for the Festival by Mark Pollit from D&G Environmental Resources Centre at Kirkgunzeon.
The walkers were mainly local folk, but people also came from as far away as Manchester and Perth for the Festival. Several asked about the plans for next year’s Festival, while the organisers are still trying to get over this year’s event !!
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped to make this a success.
