Dalbeattie Community Initiative

About 'The Initiative'

Dalbeattie Community initiative was formed in September 1997 in response to a number of local business closures and the subsequent negative impact on the economy and the local community. It's aim was and still remains:

'To act as a catalyst within the community, to respond to local needs and effectively reflect local priorities in order to promote and encourage the economic, social and physical regeneration of Dalbeattie and surrounding area'.

The Initiative is already recognised as a key organisation in the town for regeneration activities and will work towards achieving this aim by:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring a phased programme of actions.
  • Working in partnership with appropriate local and national groups, organisations and agencies.
  • Identifying relevant funding sources, raising, receiving and managing monies to meet the objectives of the Initiative.

Legal Status

Originally set up as a constituted voluntary group, the Initiative changed its legal status in 2002 to become a company limited by guarantee. This move was made primarily to limit the liability of its members, recognising the increased financial responsibilities, as well as the increased liabilities of individual committee members.

The Initiative also applied to the Inland Revenue for charitable status and this was achieved in November 2002.

Membership
Any member of the local community who has an interest in local development issues may apply to become a member of the Initiative. The company is managed by a board of directors who are elected on an annual basis from and by members.

Currently the elected postholders are:
Chairman: Mr Brian Atwell, Vice Chair: Mr Hamish Biggar,Treasurer: Mrs Lilly Stevenson, Company secretary: Mr Robert Murray

Local groups and organisations in particular are encouraged and invited to become members in order to contribute to overall development activities. The following groups are represented in the membership:
